Spain took the title of European women’s water polo champion after beating Russia in Budapest. The Spanish side defeated Russia 13-12 in an exciting final at the Danube Arena in the Hungarian capital.

With a score of 10-10 in the last part, Spain managed to take a 13-10 lead. Russia then took a last breath, with Ekaterina Prokofyeva and Alena Serzhantova scoring 13-12 with 22 seconds remaining. Spain, however, keep the score and secured the gold medal.

María del Carmen García Godoy was Spain’s top scorer in the gold medal match, scoring four goals. It was Spain’s second European title, having triumphed again in 2013. The victory also came just months after winning a silver medal at the World Championships in Gwangju.

Italy took fifth place with a 7-5 result against Greece, while France recorded a more comfortable 17-8 victory against Slovakia.
