It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing οf the former president (2002-05) of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) and former member of the ICMG Executive Committee José María Echevarría at the age of 88.

José María served the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games with many capacities as he was former member of the Executive Committee and Honorary President of the Technical Commission for many years.

As an athlete, he was a hockey player and he became a Spanish champion with Club de Campo.

It is without question that his death will be a great loss to the entire sports community.

ICMG President Amar Addadi and Secretary General Iakovos Filippousis have conveyed their condolences to the Spanish Olympic Committee for the death of José María Echevarría:

“It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we have been informed about the passing of José María Echevarria, former President of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), former member of the ICMG Executive Committee and Honorary President of the ICMG Technical Commission for many years. José María was a fervent supporter of the Sports Movement and of the Olympic values and a great friend.

His enormous contribution to Sport throughout his life is well-recognised and he shall be always remembered. His passing will be a great loss to the entire Mediterranean Sports Family and the Spanish Sports Community. On behalf of all the members of the ICMG please accept our sincere condolences for his loss and convey our deepest sympathies to his family and relatives.”
