The Italians celebrate with their compatriots Lamont Marcell Jacobs and Gianmarco Tamberi the gold medals in the sprint and high jump events at the Olympics.
Jacobs won the men’s 100 meters final and became the first Italian to win the most popular event in track and field, while Tamberi shared gold in the men’s high jump.
Jacobs finished first with a time of 9:80, erasing the European record he had already set in the semi-final.
Until the Tokyo Olympics, few Italians had heard of Jacobs, who has performed impressively in recent years and broke the European record twice on Sunday on the way to the medal.
Tied at 2.37m, Qatari Mutaz Barshim and Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi decided to share the gold medal rather than going in a play-off.
Italy won two gold medals in athletics at the Tokyo Olympics, for the first time since Athens 2004 (Baldini, marathon – Brugnetti, 20 km walk).
