The legendary Lighting Ceremony of the Olympic Flame scheduled for Thursday in the ancient stadium of Olympia will take place without spectators.

The Hellenic Olympic Committee announced Monday that the Lighting Ceremony will be closed to the public due to coronavirus. Only 100 guests, accredited by the International Olympic Committee and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Organizing Committee, will be able to attend the ceremony.

A costume rehearsal, scheduled for Wednesday, will also be closed to the public and the media. Media accreditations for the Lighting Ceremony will be “extremely limited,” the committee warned. Of the 169 Japanese journalists initially accredited, only 40 will eventually cover the event, reported a member of the Hellenic Olympic Committee to AFP.
