Great performances from the Mediterranean countries at the European Weightlifting Championships held in Batumi, Georgia.
Overall six countries won 42 medals in a total of 180 given to the event, demonstrating the potential in the “sport of the strong”.
Men won 25 medals with Italy getting the lion’s share of the medals with 4 gold, one silver and one bronze. France followed with 2 gold medals, Turkiye with one gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze, Albania with 1-2-2 and Spain with one silver and one bronze.
Briken Calia (ALB)
Most of the 17 women’s medals were won by Turkiye with 2 gold, one silver and one bronze. Greece won 2 gold and one bronze, followed by Spain with 1-2-0, Italy with 1-1-2 and France with three bronze medals.
The best performances were made with three medals by Italian Mirco Scarantino, Turkish Ferdi Hardal and Albanian Briken Calia. In women, Saziye Erdoğan from Turkiye, Lidia Valentin from Spain and Eleni Konstantinidis from Greece won three medals.
