The Hellenic Olympic Committee and the Cyprus Olympic Committee respectively nominated the Olympic champions Katerina Stefanidis (athletics) and Pavlos Kontidis (sailing) as candidates for the Athletes’ Commission of the International Olympic Committee.
The election of the four new members of the Athletes’ Commission will take place during the Tokyo Olympic Games and all the athletes will have the right to vote. It is an eight-year term of office for the members of the Commission and the members,after their election, also become members of the International Olympic Committee.
Katerina Stefanidi won the gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games with a jump of 4.85 meters and has also competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics. She is the current World Outdoor (2017), European Outdoor (2018), Diamond League (2019) champion, a European Indoor champion and a two-time World Indoor Championships bronze medalist.
Kontidis is currently preparing for Tokyo 2020, his fourth Olympics. At London 2012, he became the first – and to this date only – Cypriot to win an Olympic medal by taking the silver. Τhe 29-year-old is also a two-time world champion, having triumphed in 2017 and 2018.
