The Spaniards, double reigning European champions, woν France in Cairo 35-29.For the first time since 2013, the French men’s handball team is not on the podium of a World Championship. Beaten in the semi-final by Sweden, the Blues lost also in the match for third place.

The Spaniards climb on the podium of a World Championship for the first time since the title won in 2013. With this fourth place, the French, six-time world champions (1995, 2001, 2009, 2011, 2015 and 2017), are missing for the first time since 2013 the podium of a World Cup. It is also the first time since 2004 that the Blues have competed in two competitions without winning a medal.

The results of the 2021 World Cup make it possible for France to see the Olympic qualifying tournament in mid-March in Montpellier with more optimism, against three tough teams: Croatia, vice-champion of Europe last year, Portugal and Tunisia.

The Denmark of Mikkel Hansen, scorer of 7 goals and goalkeeper Niklas Landin won their second World Cup and second in a row, beating Sweden, the surprise finalist of the tournament, 26-24 in Cairo.
