From the 13th to the 15th October, were held in Mersin various ICMG meetings:
– On the 13th October: the meetings of the Technical, Medical, Cooperation and Development, Statutes and Regulations as well as Coordination “Mersin 2013” Commissions
– On the 14th October: the ICMG Executive Committee meeting and the joint ICMG/OCMG meeting
– On the 15th October: the ICMG Assembly General which was attended by the 24 Mediterrranean NOCs and 6 IOC members
The ICMG Commissions meetings, whose members were able to meet their counterparts from the newly appointed Organising Committee, as well as the joint meeting ICMG/OCMG greatly reassured the participants who were able to witness the rapid progress made by the organisers in the preparation process of the 17th edition of the Games.
There were several highlights during the General Assembly, including the award of the Order of Merit to Mr Mario Pescante and Mr. Henri Sérandour posthumously (and the award of the title of Honorary Members to Mr. Ivan Curkovic and Mr José-Maria Echeverria), the adoption of the amendments of the ICMG Charter and especially the election of the host city of the 2017 Mediterranean Games. At the end of an electoral process marked by great fair play, the city of Tarragona (Spain) won by a narrow margin its rival, Alexandria (Egypt).
One cannot forget the grand festivities planned by the Turkish organisers to celebrate the 60 years of the Mediterranean Games and the 50 years of the ICMG, double anniversary for which a commemorative medal was made and distributed to all participants. The Turkish Minister of Economy, Mr. Zafer Caglayan, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Suat Kilic, the Governor of Mersin, Mr Hasan Basri Guzeloglu, and the Mayor of Mersin, Mr. Macit Ozcan, honoured with their presence these moments of conviviality, thus demonstrating the interest in the Mediterranean Games.
