World silver medallist high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh (UKR) was awarded the Piotr Nurowski Best Young Athlete prize in Warsaw, Poland, following a vote by the 48th General Assembly of the European Olympic Committees (EOC).
The announcement was made during centenary celebrations for the Polish Olympic Committee at the Great Theatre-National Opera, which was attended by IOC President Thomas Bach, EOC President Janez Kocijančič, EOC Secretary General Raffaele Pagnozzi, and representatives of the 50 European National Olympic Committees (ENOCs).
Mahuchikh, who finished second at the recently concluded World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, claimed the 9th summer Piotr Nurowski prize ahead of swimmer Franko Grcic (CRO-2nd), artistic gymnast Giorgia Villa (ITA-3rd), cyclist Madis Mihkels (EST-4th), and fencer Liza Pusztai (HUN-4th).
All of the young athletes are medallists from the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF), Youth Olympic Games (YOG) or both. Grcic won two gold medals at the EYOF Baku 2019, Mihkels won two gold medals at Baku 2019, Mahuchikh claimed one gold at the EYOF Gyor 2017 and another at the YOG Buenos Aires 2018, Pusztai claimed two gold medals at the YOG Buenos Aires, and Villa earned three gold and a silver in Buenos Aires.
