The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games (ICMG) are proud to announce the renewal and further strengthening of their successful partnership, joining forces once again to bring the Mediterranean Games Taranto 2026 and the Mediterranean Beach Games Portimão-Lagoa 2027 to audiences free-to-air across Europe, North Africa and beyond.

Under a new agreement, EBU Members will broadcast both events across television, radio and digital services, connecting viewers with all the action and stories from two of the region’s leading multi-sport events.

In addition to Member coverage, Eurovision Sport, the EBU’s free streaming platform, will provide complementary international exposure for both events, helping showcase the diversity and shared sporting heritage of the Mediterranean region to audiences around the world.

The new agreement builds on the EBU’s pioneering partnership with the ICMG, which began with the landmark acquisition of Mediterranean Games rights for Oran 2022 and continued with great success at the Mediterranean Beach Games Heraklion 2023. Since then, the collaboration has played an important role in expanding the reach and profile of the Mediterranean Games, helping strengthen their position among the world’s leading regional multi-sport events.

The Mediterranean Games Taranto 2026 will take place from 21 August to 3 September 2026 and feature 31 sports. Alongside established disciplines such as athletics, swimming, gymnastics and volleyball, the programme also reflects the evolving nature of the Games with the inclusion of sports such as 3×3 basketball, padel, skateboarding and roller sports.

The Mediterranean Beach Games Portimão-Lagoa 2027, taking place from 11-18 September 2027, will bring together athletes across a varied programme of beach and water sports, including beach volleyball, beach soccer, kiteboarding, open water swimming and rowing beach sprint.

Iakovos Filippousis, Secretary General of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games, said: “The renewal of our partnership with the European Broadcasting Union is of strategic importance for the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games. It is not simply a broadcasting agreement; it is a strong alliance built on shared values, common vision and a deep commitment to bringing the Mediterranean Games closer to the people, especially to younger generations and new audiences.

“Our cooperation with the EBU has already proven to be a game changer for the visibility and international profile of our events. From Oran 2022 to Heraklion 2023, we witnessed how the expertise, credibility and network, as well as the highest broadcasting standards of the EBU and its Members can significantly increase the viewing of the Games, strengthen their storytelling and offer athletes the exposure they deserve on a much wider stage.

“We are particularly proud that this collaboration allows the Games to be broadcast free-to-air across many Mediterranean countries and beyond. This is fully aligned with our mission to make the Mediterranean Games accessible, visible and relevant to all. Together with the EBU, we are building a stronger platform for our athletes, our National Olympic Committees, our host cities and the entire Mediterranean sporting family, we are working to further elevate the Mediterranean Games.

“The ICMG deeply values this strategic alliance and looks forward to continuing to work closely with the EBU and its Members in order to deliver outstanding coverage of Taranto 2026 and Portimão-Lagoa 2027, while further strengthening the legacy and future of the Mediterranean Games.”

Andreas Aristodemou, Director of Olympics, EBU Sport said: “The Mediterranean Games continue to represent a unique opportunity to bring audiences together through sport and to celebrate the diversity and shared heritage of the Mediterranean region.

“The multicultural nature of these Games, bringing together athletes and audiences from across Europe, Africa and Asia, makes them especially meaningful for the EBU and our Mediterranean Members.

“Building on the success of our first partnership with the ICMG, we are proud to continue our collaboration and build on our shared vision for growing the reach of the Mediterranean Games and connecting more fans with the stories at their heart.

“Together with our Members and through our Eurovision Sport platform, we look forward to bringing Taranto 2026 and Portimão-Lagoa 2027 to our audiences across Europe, North Africa and beyond.”

The renewed partnership reflects the EBU’s broader commitment to premium multi-sport coverage. With a programme combining established Olympic disciplines with fast-growing urban and beach sports, the Mediterranean Games continue to provide a compelling platform for engaging new generations of fans, on the road to the Olympic Games LA28.
