
Dimevski: “The six medals in Taranto confirm that North Macedonia has athletes capable of great achievements”
September 26, 2026The Cyprus Olympic Committee (COC) celebrated Olympic Day with great success and strong participation from athletes and the public on Sunday, 27 September, in the mountainous region of Pitsilia.
The celebrations were organised by the Cyprus Olympic Committee, in cooperation with the National Betting Authority and the Community Councils of Agios Ioannis Pitsilias and Agros.
The road races started from the main square of Agios Ioannis, with the Periklis Demetriou Runners Club as co-organiser of the races.
The event was honoured by the presence of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Ms Evanthia Tsolaki. The event was held under the auspices of the Commissioner for the Development of Mountain Communities, Mr Charalambos Christofina.
Among those attending were the Secretary General of the COC, Yiotis Ioannides, and the Treasurer of the COC, Yiannos Fotiou.
Addressing the participants in the road races and the public attending the celebrations, COC Secretary General Yiotis Ioannides said: “The choice of this area once again highlights that sport and the values of Olympism must reach every community in Cyprus, providing opportunities for participation and inspiration to everyone. We are particularly delighted and moved by the strong participation in today’s events, especially by children. In their faces, we see the hope and inspiration that will continue to keep the flame of sport burning in our homeland.
“The Cyprus Olympic Committee is using today’s event to fulfil its mission: to promote the principles, values and spirit of Olympism throughout society.”
All participants received commemorative medals and certificates of participation. In addition, prizes were awarded to the top three finishers in each category.
