
Francesco Purromuto is the new President of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games
August 20, 2026The Ordinary Elective General Assembly of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games (ICMG) took place in Taranto, one day before the Opening Ceremony of the Mediterranean Games Taranto 2026, with representatives of all 26 member National Olympic Committees in attendance.
The General Assembly opened with the ICMG Anthem and a minute of silence in honour of the memory of the late ICMG President Davide Tizzano.
The ICMG First Vice-President, acting as President, Mr Mehrez Boussayene, addressed the General Assembly, welcoming the representatives of the 26 National Olympic Committees and highlighting the importance of unity and cooperation within the Mediterranean Family.
The Assembly was also addressed by IOC Executive Board Member and EOC President, Mr Spyros Capralos, representing IOC President Kirsty Coventry, as well as by the Mayor of the City of Taranto, Mr Pietro Bitetti, and the President of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), Mr Luciano Buonfiglio.
A particularly significant moment of the opening session was the ICMG Order of Merit Award Ceremony for Mr Emmanouil Katsiadakis, in recognition of his outstanding contribution and long-standing service to the Olympic and Mediterranean sports movement.
In the Statutory Opening ICMG Secretary General Mr Iakovos Filippousis presented the ICMG Executive Committee Activity Report, outlining the work and key developments of the organisation during the previous period.
The financial affairs of the ICMG were presented by Treasurer Mr Yiotis Ioannides, who delivered the Financial Report and presented the proposed budgets for 2027 and 2028.
The works of the General Assembly continued with election of the ICMG Executive Committee for the period 2026-2030 and the election of the ICMG Ethics Commission and Francesco Purromuto elected ICMG President.
The final part included the presentation by the OCMG Taranto 2026, the presentation by the OCMBG Portimão-Lagoa 2027 and the presentation by the OCMG Prishtina 2030, by the Sports Minister of Kosovo, Blerim Gashani.
The General Assembly brought together the Mediterranean Family at a historic moment, on the eve of the opening of Taranto 2026, reaffirming the unity, cooperation and shared commitment of the 26 member National Olympic Committees to the future of the Mediterranean Games.
