The Tokyo Olympics ended on Sunday, 8 August, after 16 days of intense competition. The official handover between Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 took place at the end of the closing ceremony of the Games. At the same time, a ceremony was organized at the Trocadéro to celebrate the handover of the flag.
“And now, I have to mark the end of this most challenging Olympic journey: I declare the Games of the 32nd Olympiad closed” said Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), a few minutes before the flame extinguished.
During this ceremony, Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, received the Olympic flag from the hands of Thomas Bach. The handover between the Governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike, through the IOC President, marks the start of the 33rd Olympiad. This will end with the Olympic Games (July 26-August 11, 2024) and Paralympics (August 28-September 8) in Paris.
In sporting terms, the medal table ranks the United States in first place, followed by China and Japan. At the foot of the podium, the British distinguished themselves as the first European nation.
