February 12, 2025The Cyprus Olympic Committee (COC) reaffirmed its commitment to the promotion and development of sport in the country at its annual awards ceremony for young athletes.
During the ceremony, the President George Chrysostomou, praised the recent achievements of Cypriot athletes in international competitions, in particular the silver medal won by Pavlos Kontides at the Paris Olympic Games.
The exceptional performances of Marios Georgiou, Elena Kulitsenko, Milan Trajkovic, Sofia Asvesta and Olivia Fotopoulou were also highlighted. The COC continues its dedicated work in line with Olympic principles, ensuring that support for athletes is transparent and merit-based through programmes such as Olympic Solidarity.
The Glafkos Clerides Award, given annually to the best male and female athletes of the year, was presented to Pavlos Kontides and Elena Kulitsenko. Both athletes achieved their greatest successes at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where Pavlos Kontides won a silver medal in sailing and Elena Kulitsenko finished seventh in the high jump.
Τhree exceptional athletes were honoured during the ceremony for their contribution to Cypriot sport: Andris Eleftheriou, Eleni Artymata and Andreas Kariolou. The three athletes, who brought Cyprus moments of pride and emotion for over two decades, announced their retirement from competitive sport last year.
