Τhe meeting of the Serbian Olympic Committee with the IOC President Kirsty Coventry
April 3, 2026On the occasion of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, proclaimed in 2013 by the United Nations with the support of the International Olympic Committee , the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games (ICMG) joins the global sporting community in celebrating the unique power of sport as a means of bringing people together.
This year’s theme — “Sport breaks barriers and builds bridges” — resonates particularly strongly within our Mediterranean region, rich in its cultural diversity, yet also facing persistent challenges and tensions.
In this context, sport more than ever stands as a universal language, capable of transcending differences, promoting mutual respect, and strengthening ties between nations. It embodies essential values : solidarity, inclusion, dialogue, and peace.
As preparations for the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games continue, the ICMG reaffirms its commitment to making this event a strong symbol of unity and fraternity among the peoples of the Mediterranean. In line with our motto — “Sport in the service of friendship and peace” — these Games will carry the ambition of bringing together Mediterranean youth around shared values and a common future.
On this day, we call upon all stakeholders of Mediterranean sport — athletes, institutions, federations, National Olympic Committees, and partners — to continue their efforts to make sport a powerful lever for development, social cohesion, and lasting peace.
More than ever, let us make sport a bridge between cultures and a source of hope for future generations.
