March 24, 2025Fernando Gomes was elected president of the Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP) for a four-year term until 2029, winning 103 votes against 78 for his opponent, Laurentino Dias.
A native of Porto, the 73-year-old Gomes served as president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) for 13 years, until last month.
List B, led by Fernando Gomes, received 57% of the votes, totaling 103 votes, while List A, headed by Laurentino Dias, secured 43% with 78 votes. Voter turnout was 99%, with one spoiled vote.
In his first statement following the results, Fernando Gomes thanked the COP members, saying: “It is an honor to have been elected by the Olympic Movement as President of the COP and to be able to continue serving Portugal.”
He also announced plans to convene both Olympic and non-Olympic federations, as well as athletes, for a “first major meeting” aimed at “listening to the proposals that everyone, without exception, would like to see included in the program that we will implement until 2029,” Gomes said.
