CONI President Giovanni Malagò conducted an inspection at the Erasmo Iacovone Stadium in Taranto, which is currently being demolished in preparation for the 2026 Mediterranean Games.

During his visit, President Malagò was briefed in detail on the progress of the reconstruction of the Iacovone Stadium and toured two other facilities for the Games: the stadiums in Martina Franca (Taranto) and Francavilla Fontana (Brindisi).

Accompanied by the Commissioner and President of the Organizing Committee, Massimo Ferrarese, Taranto Mayor Rinaldo Melucci, and Chief Executive Carlo Molfetta, the head of Italian sports emphasized the significance of the ongoing work ahead of the next edition of the Mediterranean Games.

“I believe this is a great opportunity for everyone. We’ve made up for lost time, thanks to the new commissioner structure and, in particular, to Massimo Ferrarese: they are doing an outstanding job. Today is an important day because our presence here is, above all, symbolic,” said Malagò.

The Iacovone Stadium is currently in the demolition phase. The next phase will involve the construction of a new lower tier and the redevelopment of the upper tier, as part of a contract exceeding 50 million euros. The project is scheduled for completion by March 2026 to allow for test events ahead of the Mediterranean Games.
