The candidacy of Alicante passed the first evaluation by the members of the Executive Committee of the International Committee of Mediterranean Games (ICMG) during the meeting in Taranto. In the name of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) and the City Council of Alicante, Raquel Hernández Carbonell detailed the proposal of the Spanish city.

According to Mrs. Carbonell, Alicante is the ideal city to host the Mediterranean Beach Games. Its privileged weather conditions, state-of-the-art infrastructure and direct connection to the Mediterranean Sea make it the perfect setting for a competition on this scale. Furthermore, the city’s experience in organizing beach events, together with its policy of sustainability and accessibility, reinforce its candidature. The city has top-level sports facilities, a quality hotel infrastructure and transport connections that make it easily accessible to athletes and tourists from all over the world.

Alicante is a sport destination

The city has proven its ability to host top-level international competitions on numerous occasions, such as the Ocean Race, having been the starting port for multiple editions, thereby consolidating its position as a benchmark in nautical sports.

The Volvo Ocean Race, now known as the Ocean Race, is one of the world’s most prestigious regattas, and Alicante has been the starting port for several editions of the race. This event not only attracted thousands of international visitors, but also put the city on the map as an elite sporting destination. The city has also hosted major triathlon events, such as the Mediterranean Circuit or the World Mixed, Women’s, U-17 and Youth Sailing Championships, where thousands of athletes took part, which demonstrates the city’s organisational and infrastructural capacity. As for beach sports, Alicante has been the host of numerous beach football tournaments, including four editions of the International Beach Football Tournament Alicante City and Beach. As for beach volleyball, Alicante recently hosted the WEVZA (Western European Volleyball Zonal Association) tournaments for men and women in June 2024. In addition, Alicante was the first Spanish city to host a stage of the “APP World Tour” in December 2022 for paddle surfing.

The sports programme of the Mediterranean Beach Games 2031

The proposed programme of sports for the 5th Mediterranean Beach Games 2031 includes a wide variety of disciplines. However, other sports may be added, either due to the interest expressed by various sports federations or due to the growing demand for some disciplines at the time of the Games. Additionally to the ΜΒG core sport disciplines, the Spanish bid also proposes adding three new sports: beach rugby, paddleboarding, and sailing in the ILCA 6 and 7 classes (formerly known as the 470 class).

The proposed calendar to host the 5th Mediterranean Beach Games has been carefully arranged, considering both the optimal weather conditions and infrastructure availability in the city of Alicante. The Games’ suggested dates are from 5 to 14 September 2031, which coincides with a period when the city benefits from warm temperatures, with minimal chance of precipitation, which ensures the best conditions for outdoor activities.

The primary aim is to ensure a fast and safe transport system that provides fluid mobility from the arrival points, such as the airport or the train station, to the sport venues and accommodation. The following map shows the distances in kilometres from the sports venues to the main accommodation areas (centrally located hotels in Alicante), the accommodation area around San Juan beach, as well as to the airport, the train station and public hospitals.
