2.500 medals for Italy in the Mediterranean Games
August 24, 2026Italy took centre stage on the second day of finals at the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games. The Italian team won 22 medals, 13 of which came from swimming – a sport that has now yielded 23 medals for them over two days. Furthermore, Algeria, Serbia, Lebanon, Croatia and Morocco all claimed their first gold medals. Italy tops the medal table with 35 medals (13 gold), followed by Turkey in second place and Greece in third.
CANOE/KAYAK
In the canoe/kayak finals held this morning in Taranto’s Mar Piccolo, Italy and Portugal each won two golds, with the hosts securing five medals. Serbia claimed its first gold at Taranto 2026, thanks to the victory in the K2 500m by Strahinj Dragosavljevic and Veljko Vjestica.
SHOOTING
In the skeet shooting event, Lebanon secured its first gold of this edition thanks to Samer Sarkis. In the women’s event, Italy triumphed with Sara Bongini; meanwhile, the two Olympic champions who competed, Diana Bacosi and Gabriele Rossetti, failed to make the podium.
BADMINTON
In badminton, Turkey’s Emre Sonmez and Yasemen Bektas won gold in the mixed doubles, with silver going to France and bronze to Serbia and Algeria.
FENCING
In the men’s individual épée events, Egypt secured a one-two finish thanks to Mohamed El-Sayed and Youssef Shamel. In the women’s event, gold went to Italy’s Roberta Marzani.
TAEKWONDO
In taekwondo, Turkey once again made its mark. The Turks won a further two golds (five in total), whilst Morocco, thanks to Soufiane Elasbi in the +80kg, and Tunisia, with Firas Katoussi in the -80kg, secured their first victories at Taranto 2026.
GRECO-ROMAN WRESTLING
In Greco-Roman wrestling, Algeria won its first gold with Abdelkarim Fergat in the -60kg. The same goes for Croatia, which celebrated its first victory in the -87kg with Ivan Huklek.
SWIMMING
In swimming, Italy’s dominance continues, having won 6 golds and 13 medals on the second day. Greece is also continuing to perform well, with a further 2 golds and 6 medals. In the 200m breaststroke, Italian swimmer Lisa Angiolini set a new Mediterranean Games record with a time of 2:24.27.
