
Taranto 2026 3×3 Basketball: a pathway to Los Angeles 2028 qualification dream
May 11, 2026The Coordination Commission for the Portimão Lagoa 2027 Mediterranean Beach Games conducted a working visit to the Algarve, dedicated to monitoring the preparations for the event taking place next year in Portimão and Lagoa.
In the opening session, the President of the Olympic Committee of Portugal (COP), Fernando Gomes, noted the importance of the ongoing coordination and preparation work, highlighting the scale of the event and the impact the Games will have on national sports and the region.

Iakovos Filippousis, Secretary-General of the International Committee of Mediterranean Games (ICMG), expressed his gratitude for the hospitality of the Olympic Committee of Portugal—the event’s Organizing Committee—before the start of the proceedings. He also highlighted the priorities of the Games preparation at this stage: strategic planning, financial sustainability, unity and coherence of all stakeholders and respect to the technical specifications and milestones.
The first day’s program featured several technical sessions focused on the strategic development of the competition, covering topics such as:
- Budget planning and sports infrastructure
- Sports program and equipment
- Marketing, communication, and digital platforms
- The Games’ visual identity
Regarding the sports program it has been officially agreed to the addition of 3×3 Basketball tournament to the core program of the Games. Αn Airbadminton event will be organized for the first time in Games history as a demonstration sport.

During the afternoon, work continued with presentations dedicated to accommodation, catering, transport, accreditation, protocol, ceremonies, and volunteering.
The first day also included a technical visit to various strategic locations, including operational facilities, hotel units, and coastal areas associated with the Games. This allowed the Coordination Commission to monitor the status of the infrastructure and services planned for the event on-site.
In order to ensure a compact competitions schedule and a more convenient Games experience for all participants, the OCMBG proposed the consolidation of the sports facilities in two clusters, in Portimão’s Praia da Rocha and in Lagoa’s Praia Grande respectively.
The Coordination Commission will evaluate the proposal and recommend accordingly to the ICMG Executive Committee.
The day was further marked by a symbolic moment: the International Committee of Mediterranean Games officially delivered the invitation to the COP to participate in the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games. The invitation was received by Pedro Farromba, Executive Director of both the COP and the Organizing Committee.

The second day of work was dedicated to matters concerning services for National Olympic Committees, security, medical areas, and anti-doping.
In addition to the members of the Coordination Commission and the Organizing Committee, representatives of both Municipal Councils, hosting the Games were also present, contributing to the success of the working sessions.
