Mr. Buonfiglio becomes the twelfth president, defeating Luca Pancalli, the President of the Italian Paralympic Committee, in the first round with 47 votes to 34. The new President succeeded the outgoing president Giovanni Malagò, who has held the position for 12 years.

Luciano Buonfiglio is 74 years old, originally from Naples but raised in Milan. He earned a science high school diploma and studied law with a specialization in economics.

Buonfiglio has 36 caps with the Italian national canoe team and was several times Italian champion. He participated in five World Championships and the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, with a sports career that spanned 12 years, from 1968 to 1980. Since 2005, he has led the canoe-kayak federation, then joined CONI as a member of the National Council and served as vice-president of the Olympic Committee from 2013 to 2018 under Giovanni Malagò’s first term as president.

In his electoral program, Buonfiglio pledged investments and sound financial management to maintain the domestic and international prestige of the Italian Olympic Committee. The former Olympic canoeist crowns his sporting career with the prestigious task of leading the azzurri movement for the next four years, during which the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games and the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles will take place.

Carlo Mornati has been officially confirmed as Secretary General of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) during the session held at the Olympic Preparation Center Giulio Onesti in Rome.

Mr. Mornati has held the position of Secretary General of the Italian NOC since 2018.
