During the ICMG Executive Committee meeting in Taranto, the project for the nautical center at the former Torpedo Boat Station, along with the adjoining regatta field in the second part of the “Mar Piccolo,” was presented to the local and international community.
“The project for the new nautical center will offer great opportunities to Taranto and the entire Puglia region,” said Giuseppe Di Palo, who presented the project on behalf of the Organizing Committee for “Taranto 2026.”
The area in the “Mar Piccolo,” which has been abandoned by the Navy, will be transformed into a sports center for sailing, rowing, and canoe-kayak regattas. The project also includes a tourist promenade and a multimedia center dedicated to the history of Taranto. Construction will begin next March, and the work is expected to be completed within 11 months.
The cost of the new nautical center will amount to 15 million euros, included within the 275-million-euro budget provided by the Italian government for the construction and renovation of sports facilities as part of the organization of the 2026 Mediterranean Games.
This initiative is part of a broader redevelopment project for the Taranto waterfront on the “Mar Piccolo,” aimed at creating areas for hospitality, recreational activities, nautical sports, and cultural events.
